![]() ![]() ![]() At what point recovery is “done,” however, is a black box of mystery. Recent studies also show that mild, low-impact exercises that carry no risk for additional head injury - like walking - improve cognitive recovery following mild TBI. Basically, the treatment following a head injury is to feed the brain and let the person sleep - a lot. Neurons in crisis following a head injury need three things: oxygen, glucose and rest. In the most severe head trauma, or traumatic brain injury (TBI), external mechanical forces cause these axons to shear and break, disrupting neuronal communication and leading to cognitive deficits and sometimes death. Axons may extend up to several centimeters to reach the desired target cells. Neurons, the primary signaling cells inside the brain, transmit chemical and electrical messages along axons, which are microscopically thin protrusions emanating from neuronal cell bodies. When the brain sustains a hit, it is subject to physical forces that can cause the brain to bounce around inside the skull. Only about 10 percent of concussions involve a loss of consciousness, for instance. Also, not all brain injuries, even when diagnosed as the same type of concussion, lead to the same predictable outcomes. “Concussion” is a difficult term to define, in part because not all concussions are the same. ![]()
